We tied the knot
On a sunny monsoon day
Amid the world and its wife
Private declaration of love.
Forged some ties that bind
Others that gag.
Wonderful fabric wove
Unraveled a tangled web or two.
We tied the knot
Vowing for ever
This life and the next ones
(“What if this life were the next?”
But I am flippant!)
Unintelligible chants
Exotic customs
( Oh but it was very beautiful!)
And well staged photo ops.
We tied the knot
A day chosen
Malevolent planet to propitiate
Beneficent celestial bodies to please
With travel plans
School vacation
Company leave
All factored in
But reaching that decision
Had not taken into account
Wheres or whens or whos
Just us.
We tied the knot
But now
And it is a continuing process
We constantly reaffirm
And tie tighter
Out lives
There are no destinies
No forevers
No “meant to bes”
Because that makes
Working this thing out
Despite differences
Meaningless.
It was not fated
Not written in the stars
( Or some planet or plutoid- one should be fair)
It was a rational decision
( Ok, starry eyed a little)
Taken by two adults
Who loved each other
And that reality
Better than a billion fairytales.
We tied the knot
“Happily ever after”
Is how fairy tales end
But that was how this began
And the best thing is
There was no drastic difference
Between pre and post.
“How is married life”
I always wonder what they want to know
Because it rocks.
But so did the single life.
Maybe being in love
Is just about being
Totally yourself
We tied the knot
But that was just the wedding
And 365 days
Hundreds of hours
Thousands of seconds
Countless moments
Then
Onward
Now
Ahead
Is the marriage.
