I saw this video on the New York Times this morning.
It is heart rending how she says "They cannot stop my education" in the end.
Which makes me wonder why people allow such nonsense to take place. Groups that close down schools, that try to impose their ways on a peace loving humanity-all in the name of some strangely twiste dinterpretation of religion. And why does their leaderwhip take it seriously?
isn't it true that any fanatics first begin by trying to control women and abrogating their rights. Then other people are targetted. And yet religious extremism grows. Seems that no one really learns.

While the video opens I thought I'd just mention that what's happening in Swat valley is so unbelievable in today's times. Never thought such a situation would be allowed, there is an army, and a government - and no action is being taken.
I fear it might happen in India also ... not in one day, but we not act, then sooner than we can imagine.
That was a selfish comment, I also do feel terrible (but helpless) about what's happening in Swat valley.
Truly heart-rending video. It's very unfortunate to find these children so helpless at the hands of the Taliban.
As to why these extremists first attack women and children, I think it is probably because every fanatic, every mafia find it easier to first target the softer sections of society and then work their way up..They want to see how much they can push our buttons and get away with it..this in turn feeds their confidence and courage till they start targeting the big fish..the politicians and leaders
I remember faintly a sloka by Chanakya which said something like "the wood-cutter always cuts the straightest branches first"..although the context was different, I can see how it applicable in this situation also
Btw two observations I couldn't pass up..
1. I was surprised to see a book on Rabindranath Tagore in the hands of the father. Didn't know such books were available in Swat? maybe I am too ignorant..
2. Looking at the fine military gear and heavily armed taliban, one cannot help but ask...where are they getting their funding from?..Thats where the source is and that's where we it needs to be cut off...
a wild guess..Saudi Arabia !!
That is so tragic to watch..I keep hoping that we here will take lessons and not let such a thing happen here ever!
and what kind of a government is tis Pakistani govt?I mean to bow down to an entire militant outfit??
gawd!!thats insane!!
agree with Nitwit nastik that such groups target the softer sections of society just to see how far they can push us..
Swat is a mockery of advanced times. In this day and age too we have these kind of people and no one to question them.
As for Pakistan there is a saying in Hindi, 'Jab geedad ki maut aati hai to...'
